Saudi Coach Georgios Donis Confident Ahead of Uruguay Clash
Georgios Donis, the head coach of the Saudi national team, has expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness to face Uruguay in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup. He emphasized that the team will enter the match with the ambition to win and impose their style on the game, rather than merely defending and waiting for their opponent.
During a pre-match press conference, Donis discussed the impact of scheduled breaks due to weather conditions, noting that these pauses provide an essential opportunity for the coaching staff to convey instructions and guidance to players during the game.
“The conditions are challenging, and these breaks allow us to give instructions to our players. We cannot predict their ultimate effect on the results, but they are part of the current rules, and we must make the best use of them. They might help players execute what is required on the field,” said Donis.
When asked about the possibility of surprising Uruguay similarly to Saudi Arabia’s historic victory over Argentina in a previous World Cup, Donis highlighted that confidence and belief in their abilities are crucial factors in such encounters.
“It is important for us to know our opponent well and believe in our capabilities. No one can predict what will happen in the match; it depends on our style and focus on the field while being aware of our opponent’s strength and our own team’s capabilities at the same time,” he added.
Regarding facing Uruguay’s stars, including Federico Valverde, Donis stated that his focus is more on team performance rather than individual players.
“Every coach and team has its philosophy. When I participated in the UEFA Champions League, we faced Barcelona with Messi, Neymar, and Suarez; our focus was not on individual players but on the group as a whole. Football is a team sport, not an individual one,” he remarked.
Donis also highlighted the importance of modern technologies used in player preparation, including specialized glasses utilized by goalkeepers, affirming that they provide accurate data that contributes to technical work and enhances performance on the pitch.
The Saudi coach reiterated that his team would approach the match with an offensive mentality and a clear desire to compete. “We are not here just to defend or wait for what our opponent will do. We will pressure them and do everything we can to achieve victory because we believe in ourselves and our abilities,” he stated.
In closing his remarks, Donis stressed the importance of presenting a positive image of Saudi football, especially with Saudi Arabia preparing to host the 2034 World Cup.
“We respect all teams; each has its unique style. Our focus is on both present and future. We want to give our fans a message of hope for upcoming challenges, whether it’s the Gulf Cup or Asia Cup, as we aim to raise expectations and ambitions moving forward,” he concluded.
