Podolski Confident in Germany’s Chances for 2026 World Cup Glory

Former German star Lukas Podolski shared his insights on Germany’s prospects in the upcoming World Cup, reflecting on key aspects of their journey in the current edition of the tournament.

Podolski emphasized that the ambition of the German national team remains unchanged throughout history, stating that the perpetual goal is to win the world title, regardless of circumstances. He highlighted that possessing talented players and experienced individuals from the Champions League equips the team for competition.

In a recent interview with Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, he noted that Germany’s status as a leading contender is not the decisive factor. He explained that winning the World Cup does not necessarily require being the most favored team, but rather depends on readiness and cohesion on the field.

Regarding the current team’s strengths and weaknesses, Podolski acknowledged that he is not focused on intricate technical details. However, he observed a strong presence of individual player quality and significant experience at high levels, asserting that the biggest challenge lies in the team’s ability to function as a cohesive unit.

He also commented on veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer’s return to the national squad at age 40, expressing partial surprise at this decision following a previous absence. Nevertheless, he stressed that Neuer still possesses immense energy and capability to contribute, particularly given his impressive form with Bayern Munich.

Podolski added that Neuer’s experience and presence in camp hold invaluable worth that cannot be quantified numerically, due to his calm demeanor and influence in the locker room, even if it comes at the expense of other goalkeepers awaiting their chance.

Discussing Germany’s opening match against Curaçao in the tournament, Podolski stated it is imperative for Germany to secure a victory by any means necessary, predicting a 3-0 win.
