Ghana Faces Setback as Thomas Partey Denied Entry to Canada for World Cup Opener
The Ghana national football team has suffered a significant blow just days before kicking off its campaign in the 2026 World Cup, as veteran midfielder Thomas Partey has been barred from entering Canada. This means he will miss the opening match against Panama.
The match is scheduled for June 17 at BMO Field in Toronto, where Ghana will face Panama in the first round of the group stage.
Visa Issues Halt Villarreal Star’s Journey
According to a report from The Athletic, Partey, a former Arsenal player currently with Villarreal in Spain, was unable to secure a visa to enter Canada. As a result, he is officially ruled out of the Black Stars’ opening game.
Partey had joined the Ghana squad at the beginning of June and traveled with the team to the United States for a training camp in Rhode Island. However, Canadian authorities denied him entry at the border, preventing him from continuing his journey with his teammates.
Legal Complications Behind Canada’s Decision
The strict refusal by Canadian authorities stems from ongoing legal issues surrounding Partey in the UK. In July 2025, London police charged him with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, with two additional charges added in February 2026.
Although Partey declared his innocence regarding all charges last April and the case remains pending in British courts without a final ruling or formal conviction against him, Canada’s stringent immigration laws prohibit entry for individuals facing unresolved criminal charges.
FIFA Declines Involvement: Government Decisions Are Sovereign
In an official statement relayed by The Athletic, FIFA confirmed that Partey would not be present in Toronto. The organization emphasized its lack of responsibility regarding such matters, stating that “visa and immigration decisions are entirely subject to domestic laws and government authorities of host countries, and FIFA has no right to intervene in these sovereign decisions.”.
Tactical Dilemma for Ghana in ‘Group of Death’
Partey’s absence presents a significant tactical loss for Ghana due to his extensive experience and leadership role in midfield. This situation places considerable pressure on the coaching staff to find a suitable replacement before their opening match.
The challenge is compounded by the other teams in Group G, which includes England and Croatia alongside Ghana and Panama. The Ghanaian squad aims to replicate their success from the 2010 World Cup and advance to the knockout stages.
