Historic Night in Mexico: World Cup 2026 Opening Sets Multiple Records
The opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup between Mexico and South Africa was not just a kickoff for the largest edition in the tournament’s history; it turned into an extraordinary night filled with numerous records and historical moments that will be etched in the memory of this championship.
Held at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, this match continued to make history as it became the first stadium to host World Cup matches across three different editions: 1970, 1986, and now 2026, coinciding with the inaugural tournament featuring 48 teams.
The first goal of the 2026 World Cup came in the ninth minute when Julian Quinones scored for Mexico, capitalizing on a decisive assist from his teammate Eric Lira, who became the first player to register an assist in this edition of the tournament.

The match also saw the first yellow card of the tournament issued to South African player Thibaut Mokwena in the 17th minute. Quinones came close to scoring a second goal but was denied by the post in the 42nd minute, marking the first time a ball hit the post in this World Cup.
As the second half commenced, historical events continued when referee issued the first red card of World Cup 2026 to South Africa’s Sphesihle Sithole in the 49th minute. Raul Jimenez then extended Mexico’s lead with a second goal in the 67th minute, set up by Roberto Alvarado.

Excitement peaked in the final minutes as South African player Thembi Zwane received his team’s second red card in the 84th minute. This was followed by Mexican player Cesar Montes being sent off just two minutes into stoppage time. The match concluded with an unprecedented three red cards issued during an opening game of a World Cup.

On a results level, Mexico secured its first victory in World Cup 2026 and became the first team to keep a clean sheet in this edition after winning by two goals to nil.
