Written byFerdous Saeed

The opening match of the 2026 World Cup, featuring Mexico and South Africa, set a historic record by issuing three red cards, marking the first time this has occurred in a World Cup opener.

South African players Sifiso Sethole and Temba Zwane received their red cards in the 49th and 84th minutes, respectively, before Mexican player Cesar Montes was sent off during stoppage time.

This is also the first instance in World Cup history where two players from the same team were sent off since the Portugal-Netherlands match in 2006. Notably, only four red cards were issued throughout the entire 2022 World Cup, which consisted of 64 matches.

Mexico secured its first three points in the 2026 World Cup with a crucial victory over South Africa in their opening game held at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Wednesday evening.
