Omar Marmoush, forward for Manchester City and the Egyptian national team, has declared that Egypt’s participation in the 2026 World Cup will not merely be symbolic. Instead, he emphasized that it presents a genuine opportunity for competition, stating that ambitions are significantly rising as the team prepares for its second World Cup appearance in 36 years.

Marmoush is on the verge of making history as he would become the first Egyptian player to represent Manchester City at a World Cup. He is expected to lead Egypt’s attack in Group F, which includes Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand, alongside teammate and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah. Matches will take place in various American and Canadian cities, including Seattle and Vancouver.

The 27-year-old is also set to achieve a personal milestone, with his first World Cup match coinciding with his 50th international appearance after playing his 49th in a recent friendly where Egypt defeated Russia 1-0.

In an interview with Manchester City magazine, Marmoush expressed that participating in the World Cup is a dream for any player. However, he stressed that Egypt is not merely there to participate but to compete seriously and perform at a level befitting Egyptian football.

While acknowledging the strength of competing teams, he highlighted that Egypt possesses exceptional talent and enough experience to advance far in the tournament. His primary goal is to progress beyond the group stage and make a mark on the world stage.

Marmoush also revealed an intriguing detail about his past: he received an offer to represent Canada due to family circumstances but ultimately chose to play for Egypt, emphasizing that his connection to his roots was decisive in his decision.

Discussing his relationship with his homeland, he noted that he has spent most of his life in Egypt and always looks forward to returning whenever possible. He believes that the sense of belonging and comfort he feels there cannot be compared to any other place.

Regarding team dynamics, Marmoush praised the positive atmosphere within the squad under the guidance of the coaching staff, affirming that their focus remains on improvement and delivering top performances in every match.

He concluded by commending teammate Mohamed Salah as a significant source of inspiration due to his remarkable career in Europe. Together with other players, they aim to represent Egypt in the best possible light at the World Cup.
