Mohamed Shabana Highlights Organizational Issues Ahead of Controversial World Cup

Written byFerdous Saeed

Mohamed Shabana, a prominent media figure, expressed concerns about recent developments surrounding the organization of the World Cup, emphasizing that these incidents raise numerous questions. He pointed out that the situation involving Somali referee Omar Artan reflects underlying organizational problems that need to be addressed.

During a segment on the program “Number One” aired on CBC, Shabana stated, “Every day brings new incidents that confirm we are heading toward a World Cup surrounded by considerable organizational controversy. The latest example is Joseph Blatter’s attack on FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding the Somali referee’s ban from entering the United States.”.

He added, “Omar Artan received a warm welcome upon his return to Somalia, celebrated by the Somali people alongside the President and Prime Minister, highlighting the respect he commands in his country.”.

Shabana further remarked that if Issa Hayatou, the former president of the African Football Confederation, were present in this situation, he would have likely taken a strong stance against what occurred and might have called for African teams participating in the World Cup to withdraw in protest.

Concluding his remarks, Shabana questioned why the African Football Confederation has not taken a clear position regarding the treatment of referee Omar Artan.
