The Iranian Football Federation has submitted an official request to FIFA, seeking permission for its players to wear black armbands during their upcoming group stage match against Egypt at the 2026 World Cup.

According to Iranian news agency Tasnim, the match is scheduled for June 27 in the United States and coincides with the commemoration of Imam Hussein and his companions on Ashura. This significant occasion has prompted the federation’s request to don black armbands during the game.

Reports indicate that the Iranian federation has communicated its desire to FIFA, expressing hope for approval in light of the religious significance of the event.

Additionally, it was noted that a similar request was previously made by the Iraqi Football Federation, which sought permission to wear black shirts during their match against Senegal on the same day.
