Manchester City Receives Positive News on Josko Gvardiol Amid Transfer Speculation

Written byFerdous Saeed

Manchester City has reportedly gained a significant advantage in their efforts to retain defender Josko Gvardiol, who has been the subject of interest from top European clubs.

The 24-year-old Gvardiol, who joined City from RB Leipzig for a record £77 million in August 2023, has made 122 appearances for the club across all competitions. He quickly established himself as a key player in Pep Guardiola’s squad and was honored as City’s Player of the Season for the 2024-25 campaign. However, his contributions were limited last season due to a four-month injury layoff caused by a broken leg sustained in January.

With Guardiola’s departure from the Etihad Stadium now confirmed, Gvardiol is among several high-profile players speculated to be leaving this summer. Recent reports have suggested that the defender is an admirer of Bayern Munich, while Real Madrid is also rumored to be considering a move for him.

Contract Negotiations Progressing Well

Gvardiol’s current contract with Manchester City is set to expire in June 2028, and the club aims to secure his future by negotiating a long-term extension. According to BBC Sport, there is optimism within the club’s hierarchy that Gvardiol will choose to remain at City, with discussions about an extension reportedly progressing positively.

Sporting director Hugo Viana is overseeing player recruitment and contract renewals at the Etihad while also managing the transition to a new head coach, with Enzo Maresca expected to take over following Guardiola’s exit.

The positive developments regarding Gvardiol come after he downplayed transfer rumors, stating he is “happy at Man City” and feels he has “everything I need” at the club.

Viana Focuses on Future Contracts

If Gvardiol agrees to extend his contract, Viana can shift his focus to renewing deals for three other key players: Rodri, Phil Foden, and Jeremy Doku. Rodri is nearing the end of his contract, which has just 12 months left. The midfielder, linked with Real Madrid, has indicated he will decide on his future after competing in the 2026 World Cup with Spain.

Foden is reported to have reached an agreement in principle for a new long-term contract at the Etihad; however, formalities are still pending before it can be finalized. Doku also has two years remaining on his current deal and discussions regarding an extension are said to be advanced following an impressive season where he scored eight goals and provided 14 assists in 47 matches.

Nathan Ake and Mateo Kovacic both have contracts expiring in 2027, but it remains uncertain if they will receive new offers from the club.
