Neuer and Courtois Aim for Clean Sheet Record at 2026 World Cup

Written byFerdous Saeed

Goalkeepers Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtois enter the 2026 World Cup with a unique ambition: to climb the ranks of legendary goalkeepers known for the most clean sheets in World Cup history.

Neuer will lead the German national team, while Courtois is a key player for Belgium in the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Barthez and Shilton at the Top

The record for the most clean sheets in World Cup history is held by French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez and Englishman Peter Shilton, both of whom achieved this feat in ten matches during their World Cup careers.

This record remains unmatched, keeping Barthez and Shilton at the pinnacle of goalkeeping achievements across all previous World Cups leading up to 2026.

Neuer and Courtois Face Historic Opportunity

Trailing Barthez and Shilton are five goalkeepers who managed to keep clean sheets in eight matches: Dutchman Jan Jongbloed, Brazilians Emerson Leão and Claudio Taffarel, along with German keeper Sepp Maier and Frenchman Hugo Lloris.

Both Neuer and Courtois have recorded seven clean sheets in their World Cup appearances, putting them just three matches away from equaling the historic record.

The current edition of the World Cup presents both goalkeepers with a golden opportunity to enhance their records and inch closer to the top of this prestigious list, especially as Germany and Belgium aim to make deep runs in the tournament.
