Tuchel Critiques England’s Performance Despite Victory: We’re Not at Our Best Ahead of World Cup
Thomas Tuchel, the head coach of the England national team, expressed his dissatisfaction with his squad’s performance despite securing a 1-0 victory over New Zealand in a friendly match, part of their final preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
The “Three Lions” clinched the win with a header from captain Harry Kane during stoppage time of the first half at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, in front of an audience exceeding 25,000 spectators.
Following the match, Tuchel remarked that while the overall performance was acceptable, it did not meet the required standard. He noted that the second half showed improvement in terms of attacking sharpness and organization on the field, as the team created more chances and frequently reached the penalty area.
Conversely, the German coach criticized his players’ first-half performance, emphasizing their lack of proper positioning and an over-reliance on individual solutions. This negatively impacted their rhythm and complicated their ability to execute counter-pressing.
Tuchel added that the team resorted excessively to crossing, long-range shots, and long passes—an approach that does not align with the playing philosophy advocated by his coaching staff.
He concluded his comments by explaining the inconsistency in performance, attributing it to a lack of cohesion among players due to not playing together for several months. Additionally, he mentioned limited training sessions and significant changes to the lineup as key factors affecting the team’s level during the match.
