Monastery Clarifies Removal of Announcement for Father Matta El-Meskeen Commemoration
The Monastery of the Virgin Mary in Wadi El-Natrun has removed an announcement regarding the commemoration of the late Father Matta El-Meskeen following pressure and criticism from certain conservative factions.
This marked the first instance where a Coptic monastery, apart from the Monastery of Saint Macarius in Wadi El-Natrun, announced its participation in honoring Father Matta El-Meskeen’s memory.
The monastery explained that publishing the memorial for Father Matta El-Meskeen on its website was merely an expression of gratitude and respect for a monk who spent part of his monastic life within the monastery. His initial stay began when he entered the monastery in 1948 and lasted until he moved to the Monastery of Saint Samuel in July 1956, after which he returned to the monastery in 1959 before leaving permanently in 1960.
In a statement, the monastery noted, “While recognizing that there are differing opinions and evaluations, the intention behind publishing the memorial was not to engage in discussions or debates on these matters but simply to highlight a historical aspect related to his connection with the monastery.”.
The monastery emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace and love among all. The fathers decided to remove the memorial to avoid any disputes or confusion that might arise among their community, stating this decision was made with wisdom and parental care, not because they viewed its publication as a mistake or doctrinal stance.
In conclusion, the monastery expressed gratitude towards its members for their continuous love and loyalty, praying that God preserves His church and its children in unity of spirit.
