World Cup 2026: Can the U.S. and Iran Meet in Knockout Stages?

Written byFerdous Saeed

Despite the recent political and military tensions between the United States and Iran, the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup may present an opportunity for an entirely different scenario: a potential match between the two nations on the pitch during the later stages of the tournament.

Iran will kick off its World Cup journey on June 16 against New Zealand, followed by challenging matches against Belgium and Egypt in Group G.

On the other hand, the U.S. team, as one of the host nations, will begin its campaign on June 13 with a match against Paraguay, followed by encounters with Australia and Turkey in Group C.

Potential Showdown Between the U.S. and Iran

According to a report from Britain’s The Sun, tournament regulations prevent a meeting between the two teams in the group stage due to their placement in different groups—Iran is in Group G while the U.S. is in Group C. This means any potential clash would depend on developments during the knockout rounds.

The likelihood of a matchup increases if both teams finish second in their respective groups, allowing them to face each other in the Round of 32. They could also meet in the Round of 16 if each team tops its group and advances past the initial knockout stage. A quarter-final encounter remains possible but would require more complex outcomes from earlier matches.

Historically, Iran has struggled to advance past the group stage in previous World Cup appearances, while the U.S. reached the Round of 16 in Qatar 2022 before being eliminated by the Netherlands. Notably, they missed out on qualification for the 2018 tournament in Russia.

The best achievement for the United States in World Cup history was finishing third in its inaugural edition in 1930—a feat they hope to replicate or surpass during their home-hosted tournament in 2026.
