Wolverhampton Wanderers Bid Farewell to Club Icon Matt Doherty
Wolverhampton Wanderers have officially announced the departure of Matt Doherty, recognizing him as a ‘true modern-day club icon’ following his long tenure with the team.
After an eight-year spell in the Premier League, Wolves are gearing up for their return to the Championship with a revamped squad. While midfielder Andre remains with the club and former England international Kieran Trippier is nearing a free transfer agreement, it was anticipated that Doherty would exit the West Midlands side.
Doherty’s last season saw him feature in just two of the final 14 Premier League matches, including a notable appearance in a 2-1 victory against Liverpool. He was an unused substitute on seven occasions during that period.
On Saturday morning, Wolves confirmed that the Republic of Ireland international’s time at the club would conclude after he made 389 appearances over two spells spanning 13 years.
“After nearly 400 appearances, Matt Doherty’s incredible Wolves career will come to an end this summer,” the club stated in a heartfelt message on social media. “Thank you for everything, Doc.”.
Wolves Honor Doherty’s Legacy
In an extensive tribute on their official website, Wolves hailed the 34-year-old as a ‘true modern-day club icon,’ noting his ‘dry humour and wit’ that endeared him to many behind the scenes.
Doherty is celebrated as an ‘understated leader,’ with technical director Matt Jackson offering further commendation for the veteran player.
“It’s rare to find genuine ‘club men’ in today’s game, but Doc is undoubtedly a Wolverhampton Wanderers man,” Jackson remarked. “He has been exceptional during his 13 years at the club, both on and off the pitch. He has evolved from an inexperienced teenager into the most senior and experienced member of our squad.”.
Jackson added, “He serves as a great role model for young players looking to build careers at the highest level and has earned everything that football has granted him.”.
Doherty’s Place in Wolves History
Doherty leaves behind a legacy filled with significant moments and fond memories after 13 years with Wolves.
With 389 appearances, he ranks 16th on Wolves’ all-time appearance list. His contributions include 33 goals and 41 assists across all competitions, with standout performances during the 2018-19 Premier League season where he scored four goals and provided five assists, helping Wolves secure Europa League qualification.
Since making his debut on January 8, 2011—after joining from Bohemians for £75,000—Doherty has also celebrated Championship and League One titles with Wolves. The value he brought to the club makes his signing one of their most astute pieces of business in history.
