FIFA Introduces AI-Driven Player Performance Metrics for 2026 World Cup
The International Football Federation (FIFA) has announced the launch of an advanced system designed to evaluate individual player performance during the 2026 World Cup. This initiative aims to provide a more precise and objective assessment of players’ abilities on the field.
The new system utilizes advanced data analytics and football intelligence technologies, enabling a comprehensive measurement of players’ impacts in matches beyond traditional statistics.
Developed under the supervision of Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, the system employs sophisticated algorithms that focus on monitoring players’ technical and physical attributes, as well as their contributions throughout various phases of play.
Wenger, the former Arsenal manager, emphasized that future player evaluations will not solely rely on personal impressions but will be based on precise metrics derived from match events. This includes offensive and defensive aspects, as well as chance creation, aiming to establish a more equitable global standard for assessing individual performance.
Players who meet a minimum participation threshold of at least 20 minutes will receive ratings ranging from zero to ten across three main categories: attack, playmaking, and defense.
Goalkeepers will be assessed using two distinct criteria: their performance while in possession of the ball and their contributions to build-up play, alongside their defensive capabilities in safeguarding the goal.
The official player ratings are set to be published following the conclusion of the first round of group matches, with updates occurring continuously after each game throughout the tournament.
This ranking will feature a list of the top 100 players based on performance during the World Cup, with data and statistics made available to fans and media within four hours after each match concludes.
