Ahmad Shobair Reveals Details Behind Torup’s Departure from Al Ahly
Sports broadcaster Ahmad Shobair has disclosed the details surrounding the termination of Danish coach Jes Torup’s contract with Al Ahly. He confirmed that the final agreement was signed in the early hours of this morning following extensive negotiations between both parties.
Shobair stated that Torup’s journey with Al Ahly officially concluded at 2 AM after the financial settlement was signed, marking the end of a period filled with both successes and setbacks.
During his tenure, Torup managed Al Ahly in 36 matches, achieving 18 victories, drawing 9 times, and suffering 9 defeats. He secured the Egyptian Super Cup but faced an early exit from the Egypt Cup and was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.
Shobair noted that the coach’s agent had traveled to Cairo earlier but initially encountered insufficient engagement from the club’s management despite efforts to resolve the situation. However, circumstances changed later, leading to a renewed invitation for both the agent and coach.
He added that Al Ahly enlisted influential figures to help bridge gaps in understanding, which expedited reaching a final agreement, especially given the mutual desire to resolve the matter amicably without escalation.
The agreement included a severance payment equivalent to three months’ salary for Torup, as well as his June salary and an additional month, with a percentage of total dues allocated to his agent.
Shobair explained that negotiations faced some disagreements, notably Al Ahly’s insistence on a clause preventing Torup from making media appearances in Egypt for one year, which he firmly rejected before they ultimately dropped that condition.
Additionally, it was agreed that payments would be made in two installments instead of one due to financial challenges, which was accepted by Torup.
Shobair concluded his remarks by emphasizing that the atmosphere during negotiations turned amicable in the end, allowing for a complete resolution of the matter. Torup is expected to leave Cairo within the next few hours.
