Egypt’s Foreign Minister Highlights Cairo-Tokyo Sister City Agreement

Badr Abdel Atti, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, met with Yuriko Koike, the Governor of Tokyo, to strengthen Egyptian-Japanese relations and enhance cooperation across various sectors.
During the meeting, Minister Abdel Atti expressed appreciation for the multiple visits made by Governor Koike to Egypt in recent times, the latest being her participation in the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum in November 2025. This visit coincided with the celebration of the 35th anniversary of the sister city agreement between Cairo and Tokyo.
The Foreign Minister praised the noticeable increase in cooperation with Tokyo over recent months, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as training Egyptian workers for employment in Japan, as well as collaboration in basic and higher education.
Additionally, he highlighted achievements from the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), where several memorandums of understanding were signed in renewable energy and green hydrogen. He expressed hope for their swift implementation to elevate bilateral cooperation, especially in green hydrogen development.
Minister Abdel Atti reaffirmed Egypt’s pride in the sister city agreement with Tokyo and emphasized a desire to expand cooperation to include other Egyptian governorates and cities. He noted the intention to leverage Japan’s exceptional expertise in local governance, sustainable management, waste processing and recycling, crisis management, and disaster response. Furthermore, he mentioned learning from Tokyo’s successful strategies for attracting international tourism and enhancing tourist destinations.
