Kylian Mbappé continues to etch his name in history as he led the French national team to a crucial 3-1 victory against Senegal in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match took place at New Jersey’s stadium on Tuesday evening.

The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, marks a historic moment as it features 48 teams for the first time, making it the largest and most competitive edition of the tournament ever.

Mbappé Becomes France’s All-Time Leading Scorer

In a standout performance, Mbappé scored his second goal of the match in the fifth minute of stoppage time during the second half, sealing the victory for France and extinguishing Senegal’s hopes of a comeback after they had narrowed the gap.

This goal propelled Mbappé to become France’s all-time leading scorer, bringing his international tally to 58 goals in just 99 appearances. He surpassed Olivier Giroud, with whom he previously shared the record.

New Milestone in World Cup History

Mbappé’s brilliance did not stop there; he also became France’s all-time top scorer in World Cup tournaments with 14 goals, surpassing legend Just Fontaine who netted 13 goals during his World Cup career.

Additionally, he outperformed Argentine superstar Lionel Messi on the all-time World Cup scoring list, now holding 14 goals compared to Messi’s 13, despite Messi having participated in more tournaments.

Third All-Time Top Scorer in World Cup History

Thanks to his continuous scoring prowess, Mbappé has climbed to third place on the all-time World Cup scoring chart. He trails only Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who holds the record with 16 goals, and Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazário with 15 goals.

The French star and Real Madrid player solidifies his status as one of football’s premier talents, continuing to achieve remarkable milestones and set records at such a young age.
