Mbappé Discusses Senegal Match and African Champion Controversy Ahead of World Cup

Written byFerdous Saeed

Kylian Mbappé, captain of the French national team, expressed uncertainty about the identity of the African champion, particularly amid ongoing debates between Morocco and Senegal. This statement comes just before France’s match against the ‘Lions of Teranga’ in the 2026 World Cup.

Mbappé’s comments reflect the current turmoil following the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to strip Senegal of its title and award it to Morocco due to disciplinary actions. This controversy remains unresolved, with a final ruling pending from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Despite Senegal having claimed the title on the field, subsequent decisions led to Morocco being declared champions, leaving the final resolution in limbo until CAS delivers its verdict.

The French team, a two-time World Cup champion, is gearing up to start its campaign in this edition with a challenging match against Senegal, which is also in a group with Iraq and Norway.

In a lighthearted exchange with French media, Mbappé acknowledged Senegal as one of Africa’s strongest teams but noted that he is unsure if they are still regarded as champions or if that title now belongs to Morocco.

He emphasized that Senegal possesses significant quality and experience, stating that opening the tournament against such a formidable opponent adds special significance to the match, especially given their shared history in international competitions. He anticipates a tough battle on American soil.

When asked about winning the World Cup without scoring any goals throughout the tournament, Mbappé downplayed concerns about personal statistics, asserting that lifting the trophy is his primary goal, even if it does not contribute to his individual tally.

The French star also shared his ambition to climb higher on the all-time World Cup scorers list. With 12 goals—four in 2018 and eight in 2022—he is just four goals shy of breaking Miroslav Klose’s record.

Additionally, he addressed the possibility of facing Argentina again during this tournament. He clarified that France does not harbor revenge for their loss in the last final, acknowledging Argentina’s deserving victory at that time. His focus remains entirely on competing in this tournament rather than dwelling on past outcomes.

Mbappé remarked that if they do meet Argentina again, it would simply be another match within their tournament journey. He stressed that discussions among players do not revolve around revenge or past scenarios.

The French national team is set to kick off its World Cup journey on June 16 when they face Senegal at 10 PM local time.

On a personal note, Mbappé is closing in on becoming France’s all-time leading scorer with 56 international goals—just one behind Olivier Giroud’s record of 57 goals.
