England Secures 115-Run Victory Over New Zealand in First Test at Lord’s
England triumphed over New Zealand by 115 runs to clinch the first Test match at Lord’s. The match, marred by rain, managed to stretch into a fourth day, with New Zealand struggling at 55-5 while chasing a target of 254 runs.
After England made a swift breakthrough on Sunday, taking just over three overs to claim their first wicket, it became evident that leading the best-of-three series would be a mere formality for the home side.
Ollie Robinson had shone during New Zealand’s first innings with a five-wicket haul, but it was Gus Atkinson who stole the spotlight this time. Following Ben Stokes’ dismissal of Devon Conway for 41, which left New Zealand at 111-7, Atkinson claimed the final three wickets to finish with impressive figures of 5-30 as the visitors were bowled out for just 138.
Record-Breaking Short Test Match
This match marked Lord’s 150th Test and was recorded as its second shortest ever. A tweet from Sky Sports Cricket highlighted this milestone alongside an image.
Glenn Phillips remained not out on 44 from 52 balls, a score that surprisingly turned out to be the third highest in the match.
Despite England accumulating only 366 runs across their two innings, they achieved victory by a significant margin. The match saw a total of just 617 runs scored for the loss of 40 wickets, attributed to bowler-friendly conditions and criticism directed at the pitch.
Robinson was named Man of the Match for his overall bowling figures of 7-77 and a batting contribution of 29 from just 30 balls in the second innings. The second Test is set to commence at The Oval on June 17.
